Citrus and Shade: The Trees That Define a Key West Garden

A Key West garden is not, primarily, about flowers. It is about shade.

In a climate where the sun is the governing element, the most valuable thing a garden can produce is a canopy. The trees that define the island's yards — seagrape, frangipani, mature citrus, gumbo limbo — are there because they cast the kind of shade that makes the outdoors livable.

The Citrus Legacy

The citrus trees are a legacy. Key West's gardens were, for generations, working orchards — lime, orange, tangerine, calamondin — feeding both the household and the street. A mature citrus tree in a Old Town yard is a link to that economy: it fruits reliably, it casts dense shade, and it carries, in its blossoms each spring, one of the great smells of the island.

Seagrape and Frangipani

Seagrape, with its broad leathery leaves, is the island's great shade tree — coarse, generous, nearly indestructible. Frangipani, finer and more fragrant, offers shade and one of the most intoxicating scents in the tropics. A garden with both has texture at two scales: the heavy architecture of the seagrape, the delicate perfume of the frangipani beneath.

The Gumbo Limbo

And then there is the gumbo limbo — the tree locals call the tourist tree, because its peeling red bark resembles a sunburned visitor. It is a beautiful, characterful tree, fast-growing and forgiving, and one of the great signatures of a mature island garden.

The Larger Point

When you buy a property with mature trees, you are buying decades of growth that cannot be sped up at any price. The canopy is the garden's true asset. Protecting it — and planting for the next century of shade — is among the most consequential decisions a Key West homeowner can make.
